The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says flash floods in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province have caused widespread damage to homes and critical infrastructure, leaving many affected families without adequate shelter, safe drinking water and food.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 1 Asad, the organization said its teams are carrying out rapid assessments in the affected areas to determine the full extent of the damage and identify the most urgent humanitarian needs. IOM added that emergency relief supplies are being prepared for immediate delivery to flood-affected families.
According to preliminary reports, the recent floods across parts of Nuristan have killed at least 23 people, injured several others and caused extensive damage to homes and essential infrastructure.
IOM warned that Afghanistan has experienced increasingly frequent and severe natural disasters in recent years as a result of climate change. The organization said shifting weather patterns and climate phenomena such as El Niño are increasing the risk of intense rainfall and flash floods in parts of the country.
The organization stressed that, as climate-related disasters continue to intensify, it remains committed to supporting emergency humanitarian response efforts across Afghanistan.
