German media have reported that 30 Afghan migrants were deported to Kabul early Tuesday, 25 August, on a charter flight departing from Leipzig Airport.
The German newspaper Bild reported that some of those deported had no criminal records and were forcibly removed from Germany.
Before the flight departed, a group of migrant-rights activists held a protest at Leipzig Airport against the deportation of Afghan migrants. Demonstrators chanted slogans including “No deportations, refugees welcome” and called on the German government to stop deportations to Afghanistan.
The German government had previously said that deportations to Afghanistan would mainly involve individuals convicted of serious crimes, including murder, sexual assault, threats to national security, or drug-related offenses.
However, recent reports about the latest flight indicate that some people without criminal records were also deported, raising concerns among migrant-rights activists about the possible expansion of deportation policies to include a broader range of Afghan migrants.
